We survived Election 2012!

The election is over!! Whether you are Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent, Constitution Party, Green Party, or an anarchist....  this is a HALLELUJAH moment.

Now we can turn on our phone again and start answering our door! (Seriously, never live in a swing state, you will not get a moment's peace.)

It's so amazing and inspiring to watch the votes of a nation choose the next leader.  Whether your candidate won or lost, it's a good feeling to know that you got to participate in the process, just like everyone else did. As complicated and painful as the election process is, and as confusing as the electoral college may seem, it all comes down to this: America spoke, and America chose its president.

You may be upset at the results, or even worried that the new president will take the country directions you may not agree with, but you can't deny that America chose.  There was no conspiracy; America had a choice, and America chose.

could Sasha and Malia be any more precious??

Mitt and Ann, keeping it classy in 2012!

In a world filled with corrupt and tumultuous governments, I felt a strange peace wash over me as I watched both the concession speech and the victory speech last night.  I'm thankful that I live in a country where our system of government works.  IT WORKS.  For 236 years, we have chosen leader after leader without any major upheavals in our peace.  Even in times of great war or economic calamity, America holds together.  And when the country leans more liberal or more conservative for a while, we can have faith in our checks and balances, and also know that our leaders will come and go based on our votes.

It made me a little sad to see Facebook last night.  Actually, I was downright disappointed. I saw a lot of people saying that they had lost hope in America, or that the next four years would ruin America.  Of course it's natural to be disheartened when your candidate loses an election.  And perhaps you may not like the decisions made in the country in the next four years.  But I feel like a lot of people are overlooking what I believe is an important truth:  The greatness of America doesn't rest on the one man who sits in the White House.  It rests on the goodness of millions of American people.

So be good, Americans.  There are great years ahead!

That being said, I also saw some peeps on Facebook mention things about starting a civil war, stocking up on weapons, moving to Canada, flying the flag upside down, or even forming a new nation of Romney supporters............aaaaaaand THAT'S when I began to legitimately worry for America.

Moral of the story: I love America...... and don't be cray cray.

Naturally, I've read a lot about the outcome of this election. And I've also been amazed with some of the comments. This post is the BEST thing I've read all day. This should be put in the New York Times so everyone can read it. Serious. I know you will be a great teacher... But if you ever need a second job... :)

"America spoke, and America chose its president."

THANK YOU. Goodness gracious me I've been saying this ALL DAY and no one appears to be listening ;)!

Mitt Romney is still keeping it classy and being super duper graceful about not winning the election whereas America has spoken and Obama is re-elected.

For anyone to say they'll put the flag upside down?! What the heck. That flies in the face of me thinking Americans are super patriotic. Some people are just big cry babies - worse than my two year old! ;). Democracy in action and people are crying over spilt milk? People have died - and still die - in the fight for democracy and some people could do to be a bit more grateful.

Anyway I'll step off my soap box :).

Amy, you so good. Always.

I feel like people think that the decisions that Obama has made and that Obama will make are going to plunge America into some awful poverty or nuclear war or genocide. Your observations are very astute: even during THE FREAKING CIVIL WAR the democratic process went on, and America was okay. And no matter what happens, we will only put ourselves in poverty or nuclear war or genocide if WE CHOOSE. That sounds simplistic, but I don't think it is. These checks and balances ultimately put US in charge, and until we choose otherwise, we will ultimately always be in charge. Things like recessions and depressions and wars and terrorism may hurt us for a while, even decades, but history has shown that America springs back when it works together. Does that mean that it always will? Not necessarily. But I've got faith in what's brought us this far.
