Betcha Didn't Know I Was an Artist.

It's true. I'm an artist. My medium of choice is my iPhone screen and my bony little finger.

I'm not addicted. I can quit anytime. That's what I told my professor this morning when he caught me drawing Dracula. Just kidding. We didn't exchange words; he just gave me a quizzical stare.

Hey now. I can't help that I am such a cultured person.

Domestic Goddess in Training.

I'm pretty sure yesterday was the most domestic day of my entire life. Nay, I am certain that yesterday was the most domestic day of my entire life. I went grocery shopping, I cooked, I cleaned, I scrapbooked, and I SEWED.

Yes, you read that right. I sewed. As in needles and bobbins, stitches and sewing machine kind of sewing. You see, I have this thing where I really like fashion (I can tell many of you are suddenly skeptical...) and I have been craving summer skirts.

Yes, craving, like you would crave a strawberry popsicle on a warm afternoon. Those light, cotton-y bright skirts are so summery and I want a ton of them, so I decided to commandeer my mom's sewing machine and her cupboards of fabric and make myself some skirts. I didn't need help, I didn't need advice. I know how to sew baby blankets and pajama pants. How hard could a skirt be? I found instructions entitled: the Twenty-Minute Skirt.

I think there should of been a disclaimer that said: the Twenty Minute Skirt***

***Unless your name is Amy and you fail at life, in which case plan on four hours.

I measured. I cut. I ironed. I pinned. I sewed. I sewed some more. I sewed some more. I tried on my skirt. It didn't fit. I ripped out hundreds of stitches. I sewed some more. I ripped out more stitches. I sewed again, and this time it even fit!! I wore it all around the house admiring my domesticity.

this is my skirt. it was sew hard to make. boom I went there!

Then as I was getting ready to leave the house wearing it, my dad said, "Uhh Amy.... I think there's a hole in your skirt...."

"Oh that's impossible Dad!" said I.

I looked. My stitches were falling out of the back seam, leaving a gaping hole.

So in conclusion, sewing is a fun, inexpensive way to have new clothes, except that if you wear something I sewed, there is a good chance you may suddenly find yourself naked in public.

You know what I miss?

My Olympic spirit glasses.

you couldn't help but feel joy while wearing them.

Lovingly invented and constructed last year during the Winter Olympics and worn with pride for many an Olympics watching sesh.

my birthday plus Olympic spirit glasses? A winning combo.

Then brutally destroyed by an accidental sitting-upon. I am still in mourning.

London 2012 Summer Olympics... I am eagerly waiting for you to come so that I can construct a new pair of Olympic Spirit glasses... maybe even with a little British flair??

Construction paper has never been so beautiful.

A Milestone

Growing up is full of milestones..... First dance. First date. First car. First job.

Well tonight, I've just reached another monumental step on the staircase of becoming a woman.

I got my first glue gun y'all! Of my very own!

Ok I'm a loser. But seriously, I am excited. I bought it at Michaels tonight for three dollars and I'm going to take it to college with me. Think of all the potential this baby HOLDS!!!!

None of you are ever going to read this blog again. I can tell. You are tired of glue gun posts. Ok. This was the LAST ONE.

But if you are looking for humor, check out the label that came on the glue gun:

If I wasn't too lazy to pull out a real camera you would read:

HOT! CAUTION! WILL BURN FLESH.

Now I'm not one to judge but....

Isn't there a more delicate way to put that? I mean "flesh" just sounds so gruesome. And do they have to make it seem so inevitable??? Couldn't they say "Maybe-might-PERHAPS burn your flesh if you're not careful"??

Is BURNING YOUR FLESH completely unavoidable when using this product!?!?

Maybe its just the 8 servings of Reeses Pieces talking, but those warning label people are getting INTENSE these days.

My Crafty Ways Have Caught Up to Me

Well, its 1 am... aka my night is still young. (I'm like a crazy full blown night owl, okay peeps? Now ya know!)

I've been sucked into this addiction lately. Its not okay.

I know what you're thinking. Its not drugs. I've seen all the health class videos, which taught me that drugs are bad. Except ecstasy, that video looked fun. Seriously, why show kids a movie about people having fun dancing at a party with glow sticks and tell them that its bad? Its very confusing. But no, its not drugs.

Its "crafting."

Am I allowed to call it crafting?

I'm not even sure if its that I'm not cool enough to call it that, or if I'm too cool. Probably not cool enough. Do you guys say crafting? I'm new at this.

But anyways. I've been burning the midnight oil with my mom's hot glue gun, making all kinds of creations. You see, I started reading craft blogs yesterday and I couldn't stop. So now I may end up with 18574839 headbands.

But the midnight oil isn't all I've been burning...

My poor thumbs.

The hot glue gun got to them like boiling lava. Or hot coals. Or a frying pan. Or anything else that you can think of that is super duper hot and blisters your skin.

Crafting, you are a cruel, cruel hobby to have.

By the way, if this post is depressing you, try to picture me typing without the use of my thumbs. Its pretty hilarious.

Tutorial: Headband Holder!

I will be the first to admit: I have WAY too many headbands.

It all started about a year ago when I was growing out HALF of my bangs (to make them less thick/crazy looking) and that's basically THE most awkward hair situation a girl can find herself in. So I got a couple headbands which remedied the strange two-length-bangs phenomenon. Then I found myself up at BYU where everyone loves slapping huge flowers all over their heads, and of course I wanted in on the fun, so I started collecting flower headbands like crazy. Then my roommate and I got into this staying up til 3:30 am talking on school nights phase, and I would roll out of bed at 9:30 every morning for my 10:00 class and throw on a colorful flower headband to try to look presentable and distract people from the huge circles under my eyes.

So through all of these experiences that I'm sure you are glad you took the time to read about, I collected many, many headbands. They are pretty much an addiction.

Well, headbands are kind of hard to organize. I'd just throw them on my shelf and they'd get tangled up in this ridiculous mess. I finally looked up ways to organize them and found this cute headband holder idea!

I was going to make it a few nights ago, but instead I ended up laying on the couch eating Swedish Fish until I passed out into a sugar coma and woke up an hour later wondering where I was.

But back to the tutorial:

First, find an empty canister around the house that you can use. Make sure to test it to see if your headbands fit well on it. I found a Country Time Lemonade canister. You could also use an oatmeal container, hot chocolate canister, or I even found a Lysol cleaning wipes container that would have worked, but it was full.

Well, I kind of cheated. The lemonade canister still had powder in it, so I dumped it into a ziploc bag. Shhh... My momma doesn't know yet!

I am SUCH a good daughter.

Find some cute fabric or scrapbook paper and measure it out against your canister. Cut it up and glue that sucker on there! I used a hot glue gun and it worked like a charm. Except it burnt my thumb. But its ok. Headbands are worth the sacrifice.

Try not to be TOO jealous of my photography skillz...

You can cover the lid too if you want. I was going to, but then I decided I'd rather leave it alone so I can take it on and off easily. I'm going to use the inside of my canister to put stretchy headbands and flower clips and other ridiculous hair accessories that I own too much of.

The lid needed some sprucing up, so I made a little fabric flower to glue on.

It was really quick and easy. I threw on some of my headbands to test it out. Unfortunately it won't hold all of them, but it still makes things SO much more organized.

For reals, why are my pictures so horrible??

I liked this project because it was simple and it really makes a lot of difference. I am really trying to find ways to become a more organized person, especially as I think about moving into a new apartment when I go back to college in a month. I think my old roommates will agree that my stuff always seemed to be going a little bit crazy, am I right ladies?

Don't answer that. Haha.

Now that my headbands are organized I can buy even more crazy flowers! And eat as many Swedish Fish as I want! I don't know how that ties in, but don't try to stop me. Those little fishies are addictive.

Tell me what you think of my little crafty venture!
