Ward Formal
To get ready, I shaved my legs (big deal), painted my toenails (huge accomplishment), brushed my teeth (impressive), had my sister do a waterfall braid in my hair (okay, this really was incredible, she is like a hair-stylist rockstar), and slapped on an extra coat of mascara, put on my old prom dress (it was tiiiiiiiighttttt. no really, it hurt), and then my "date" came to get me, so I ditched all other efforts. (I use the term "date" loosely here, because we were set up an hour before the dance. But he was great).
I took no pictures...
But Anne and I invented this new game that pretty much made my night. It's called "Mimick the Awkward Dance Moves of Someone Nearby and then the Other Person Guesses Who It Is."
It was not played in a spirit of mean-spirited-ness, I promise. It was a hoot, and I highly recommend you play it with a close friend at the next dance you attend, preferably where people are super into their gangsta groovin'.

My Epic Best Friend
Karen is probably the most intense person I have ever met. And she is also my best friend from growing up in Las Vegas. We met when we were only four years old. Our moms even put us in the same kindergarten class, and from there we went through every year of public school together. Karen and I bonded over years of primary classes, play dates, Nerf gun wars, Girls Camp memories, calculus assignments, and catapult- building projects.
And then we went to different colleges... about 2 hours away from each other. I went to BYU and she chose Utah State. I remember texting her a few weeks into our freshman year and saying, "This is the longest we haven't seen each other since we were four years old!" Sad.
Karen and I call each other almost every Sunday to catch up on life. We usually tell very different stories. Mine usually involve news about classes, fun with friends or awkward dates. Karen's usually involve hiking tall mountains, flying helicopters, being hired for scientific research projects, and building villages in Mexico.
She kinda lives life in a big way.
Karen is the kind of girl that takes ridiculous amounts of credit hours (with plans for a Phd) while working three jobs AND playing on the USU women's rugby team. She hikes tall mountains in her free time, parties it up whenever she can and never stops to rest. Basically, she is completely crazy. And she's totally humble about it too.
This past Sunday, instead of a phone call, I got Karen herself, in person! She stayed with me for a couple days on her way through Provo, and we had a rockin' time. We enjoyed walking around campus, eating good food, playing addicting games on my iPhone, going on a Sonic run, and mostly just sitting around and talking. We hadn't seen each other in six months!
Things I learned from Karen this week: you don't actually HAVE to put on your parking brake unless you're on a hill, Sonic Creamslushes are delicious, her car's name is Pierre, and you can actually reserve a pie.
"Um, hi Marie Calendar's... Mine name is Karen and I'd like to reserve a pie." So epic.
Even though we are very different, Karen is a big part of me and I'm a big part of her. I am a huge fan of her epic life, and I will always be cheering her on through her crazy adventures (and praying that she doesn't get eaten by bears or injured too seriously in rugby.)
When she gave her valedictorian speech at our high school graduation in front of hundreds (thousands?) of people, she wasn't even nervous.
Meanwhile, I was so excited and anxious for her that I'm pretty sure I forgot to breathe. I love that girl.

the boy who lived. and the girl who knew all about it.
My little sis Sarah and I were driving to watch Harry Potter 7 last weekend when I was home, and I was, sadly, clueless about the plot. No, I've read the books and seen the movies. I just have a terrible Harry Potter memory. I wish I knew it all better, for reals.
Thankfully, Sarah is a Harry Potter GENIUS. That girl knows everything about everything Harry Potter related.
As we zoomed along the Vegas roads on our way to the theater, Sarah managed to explain the entire plot of the first Harry Potter 7 movie, along with answering all my questions.
"Wait, so Snape's bad right?? Or is he good?? I can't remember!!! bahhh"
"Ok so, remind me what a horcrux is again...."
We enjoyed the movie (Sarah for the THIRD time) and definitely snuggled during the scary parts. Harry Potter was super hot and he and Ginny were totes adorable.
And....
SPOILER ALERT:
Harry Potter won and Voldemort lost.
Crazy, I know!!!! I wouldn't have seen the movie with anyone else.. Thanks for answering my questions all throughout the movie, Sarah!!!
she's a total hottie.Tuesday, July 19, 2011
Surprise!
Several change-machine incidents and some significant mental preparation later, we were spraying down my little silver car with exuberance. Somehow, the spraying turned to singing, and the singing turned to dancing, and the camera came out and our adventure turned to modeling.
As I was posing something fierce, Kelsey said, "Uhhh look over there!"
Yes readers, we didn't notice the line of cars in the Wendy's drive-thru watching us, with laughter and applause. SURPRISE!
It was a tender experience.
SURPRISE Number Two:
I actually managed to make blog buttons. I know, I know, nothing short of a miracle. If you want to snag one for your blog, I would be so honored! Here's a basic one, or you can find more up in the "buttons" tab, complete with button-choosing guide.

Have a great day, and remember kids: always check your surroundings before you dance in a carwash.

3. I love my left nostril a LOT...
ok just kidding... 3. I love that I can be a spunky and fun person.
And I love this picture for obvious reasons.

Thanks for the Backup Hometown!
I seriously feel like curling up into a little ball and sleeping all day under 18 fuzzy blankets when it is freezing cold outside. I want to cry a million tears when my face is numb from walking home. A little part of my soul dies with every snowflake that falls.
What do my friends at school say when I whine and complain?
"Oh, its not that bad."
"You're just being dramatic!"
"Its beautiful, you just have to appreciate it!"
"Cry baby."
What do all the people in my home ward say about the cold when I visit Las Vegas?
"Oh you poor thing going to school up in the cold!"
"Snow is the worst! I hope you're keeping warm!"
"I bet its so nice to come home away from that awful cold weather!"
"You're so brave, I don't know how you do it!"
I always knew I loved Las Vegas people the most. Thanks for keeping it real hometown peeps!

Remember when you didn't know what a blog was?
Long ago, when I was probably 13 or 14, I remember lying on my parent’s bed reading their Time magazine. There was an article about an up-and-coming internet phenomenon that I had never heard of. It was called: A BLOG.
And now blogging is what I think about when I am in the shower.
Thank you Time magazine.
And thank you readers and fellow bloggers. I got into this blog thing because I love to write and I am having so much fun meeting other funny bloggers and getting new readers! It’s so exciting for a new blogger and I love it! Thanks to Helena over at lifeinthepitts.com for not only inspiring me with her hilariousness but also featuring me this week on her blog! Virtual high-five to you my friend!
I’ll keep reading Time magazine and let you guys know what we can expect to see in the future. Maybe flying cars? Robots that do our laundry? Global warming so drastic that its summertime all year? Because that would be fantastic. Sorry. I’m cold right now.

Aw Shucks... I've Been Tagged!
1. If you could only listen to one artist for the rest of your life, who would it be?
The Beatles. (Say it with a British accent though.) My moods in music change daily... some days I am listening to Micheal Buble all day and some days I am jamming to Eminem and hardcore rap. But I am ALWAYS in the mood for the Beatles. Plus, it reminds me of my daddy.

2. Do you/ did you sleep with a stuffed animal and what is it?
Yes? I used to I think. I had a ton of stuffed animals. They were my pretend friends. I think I slept with all of them at one time or another. (Wow that sentence definitely sounds a little trashy... But keep it clean folks.) I remember this purple dragon I used to have that smelled really weird. I really liked it. Nowadays I ALWAYS sleep with this little red Squish pillow*. I cannot sleep unless my arms are wrapped around something.
*Ashley M. likes using this pillow for other purposes bahahahaha.
3. What is your favorite Disney movie?
Cinderella! I just really really love Cinderella stories in general. And I think the Disney classic Cinderella movie is just so beautiful.

4. What is one thing in your life you regret doing or not doing?
I guess I kind of regret not always being more myself because I wasn't sure if people would like me for it. But no one really likes a quiet girl who agrees with everyone anyways. I could have had many more fun times if I'd been my funny self. Truth is, I'm a straight-up gangsta and I'm really fun!
5. What is your favorite thing about blogging?
My favorite thing about blogging is definitely letting my true personality shine through. I love writing. And I am a fun-loving, sarcastic, gangsta person but sometimes I am shy and people don't even realize it. So I am glad more people are able to see me for who I am through this blog. A lot of people have told me they are surprised by my humor... guess they never knew the REAL me!
6. What is one of your most embarrassing moments?
Read this blog and you will find plenty. Grabbing a strange boy's thigh. Falling in a puddle of punch at a wedding reception. Wandering through campus with tears streaming down my face. Not to mention the time I fell into the organ pit up on the stand one time during seminary. And many, many more to come. I know its why you people read my blog! Don't act like you don't get pleasure from my pain!!! ;)
7. If you could change your name to something else, what would it be?
I would really like a gangsta name like A-mizzle Balla Holla Fershizzle so I could legitimately roam the streets of Provo and instill fear in others. Please check out this helpful (and extremely in depth) e-How article on how to create your gangster name. It is a superb resource.
8. What is one of your greatest accomplishments in life?
Hmm, I would have to say the one or two times I woke up early, ate breakfast, legitimately looked decent, and made it to class on time here at BYU over the last year. I have never been prouder. And it hasn't happened in a long, long while. And probably never will again! Holla!
Well, I hope you didn't have to grab your tissue box and hold hands and cry with your nearest friend as you read this post! Oh feelings....
I feel like I was just on Oprah...

I just really like grass, ok?
This week I took a quick trip up to Provo to visit my roommate Kirsi (well actually former roommate, but somehow I feel like I'll be calling her my roommate until we are old ladies). Kirsi is leaving soon to spend a semester in China, so we wanted to spend a couple days together before she left.
It was such a relaxing two days. Kirsi and I talked and caught up on each other's lives and went to the temple like old times. We watched movies like When in Rome and Breakfast at Tiffany's (sketch!) all snuggled up and cooked delicious food (and ate raw cookie dough which gave us huge stomachaches!). It was fun going to the Creamery for some ice cream, where we used to stagger in at night hungry and throw a bunch of random food in a shopping cart, hoping it would nourish us. Except it was usually gallons of chocolate milk and spaghetti. Man, we were such clueless freshman when it came to feeding ourselves at first! We spent Friday afternoon in Salt Lake walking around Temple Square and the nearby area. It was so beautiful.
Provo temple is our favorite place...
Oh, and while I was shopping at the BYU Bookstore, I totally saw Nie Nie, from the famous nieniedialogues buying fudge. I smiled at her. She looked really cheerful and pretty, with a flower in her hair. What an awesome lady!
While she was in class in the mornings, I really enjoyed just wandering Provo and BYU Campus. There were rainstorms on and off, and one day I spent an hour just walking around campus after it had rained. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. When I left in April, it was only just beginning to look like spring, but now everything is green! It feels like such a fresh start. I fell in love with campus all over again.
Growing up in the desert, I think of summertime as hot, dry and dusty. But summertime in Provo was cool and green. I am the kind of girl who is amazed by grass. I sat on grass every single chance I could get. I touched the grass. I walked to a park and lay on the grass for a while reading a book. And it blew my mind.
Seriously, all I needed to make this trip wonderful was a few days off work, Kirsi, and grass.
SUCCESS.
